President & CEO:
Regional Healthcare System
Our client was a $1.5B regional healthcare system, with 10 hospitals and more than 15,000 employees. The CEO had a planned retirement in one year, and he and the Board were seeking a strong leader to be hired as President and assume the President & CEO position upon the incumbent’s retirement. While there were strong internal candidates, the organization wanted to conduct a national search to ensure that the most outstanding slate could be developed and considered.
The Strategy
The incumbent CEO had been in place for 15 years, and he had been with the organization for almost 30 years. Change would be required over time, and while the Board desired this change, they also wanted to respect the great work and accomplishments of its retiring CEO. So, in addition to the critical system integration and strategic operational advancement experiences/skills required in the new President, candidates had to also demonstrate a keen sense of cultural sensitivity and pacing of change. Many of the most critical skills required for success would be “off resume” qualities and inherent leadership abilities.
The Results
A national search identified three outstanding finalists to be compared with the top internal candidate for the role. After detailed interviews, community engagement and exhaustive reference checks, a nationally recognized leader from one of the country’s most prestigious institutions was identified and hired. He assumed the President role for one year before becoming the health system’s President & CEO.
